The city of Kolkata has hosted many different cultures throughout her history. As many as sixteen different communities call Kolkata ‘home’.  In this experience we will try to understand the origins and what remains of some of these communities.

We start with the Buddhist Temple Street of Kolkata near Chittaranjan Avenue. The street got its name from the Buddhist vihara (temple) and a monastery built by Kripasharan Mahasthavir, who worked hard to revive Buddhism in Bengal. Very close to the Buddhist Temple are rows of red brick tenements, which served as barracks for the British soldiers during first World War. This place is now known as the Bow Barracks and is home to many Anglo Indian families.

We pass through the Chinese colony of Teretta Bazar, where you will find people enjoying their snacks (on a Sunday morning the place is particularly interesting for breakfast). A must stop here is a 150 years old shop run by Stella Chen selling Chinese noodles, incense stick, assorted sauces, dried mushrooms and a wide variety of other goods. Continue through crowded lane to a Parsi Fire Temple, where the remaining Parsis of Kolkata congregate during special occasions. Close by is a synagogue - symbol of Jewish contribution to the city. Afterwards we visit Armenian area, which gave the city its oldest surviving Christian church. We also visit Muslim area along the Chitpur Road and then Marwaris and Biharis at Barabazar.
