  • Enjoy a trip to Bhimbetka (1.5 hours each way).
  • Bhimbetka offers some of the earliest forms of Indian art dating back to Stone Age. The site is spread over a large area and has more than 700 rock shelters, of which over 400 have paintings. These caves are the largest treasure trove of prehistoric art in India.
  • Set amidst teak and sal trees and rock-strewn cliffs, they are listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
  • The paintings traverse various eras - Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic periods. Since these caves were dwellings for primitive people, the paintings demonstrate their lifestyle. Community activities, like birth, burial, dancing, religious rites, hunting scenes, etc have been depicted. Pictures of animals like rhinoceros, tigers, wild buffalo, bears, antelopes, boars, lions, elephants, lizards etc also find place.
  • Red and white pigments are mainly used in these paintings which have withstood the vagaries of time and remain in excellent condition.
