The revolt began in Meerut (near Delhi) and the agitators stormed into North Delhi, to reach the court of the last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, demanding his blessings for the fight. While the British call this a revolt, Indian freedom fighters termed this midnight revolt as the First War of Independence. In North Delhi, you will visit St. James Church, Kashmiri Gate, Nicholson Cemetery and the Mutiny Memorial. Your guide will constantly give you stories and references to inform you of the turmoil that the city saw in 1857 while opposing the British colonial rule in India. The narrative will then shift to 1911 when the British Raj shifted its colonial capital to Delhi. We will also visit Lutyen's Delhi, a part of the city built by the British which now houses significant government and administrative buildings. The fascinating history of the British Colonial rule in India will be retraced through stories that come with each site you visit, including the significant Englishmen in these stories such as James Skinner, John Nicholson, Edwin Lutyens and Lord Mountbatten.
