From there, we continue to Madurai via Trichy. In Madurai, we will visit the iconic Meenakshi Temple and the palace.

We end this tour in the port city of Cochin where we visit its historic sights.

  • Today you will check into your hotel under own arrangements (name of the hotel to be advised). Later in the afternoon we will proceed for a sightseeing tour of Chennai - visiting Fort St. George and Kapaleeshwar Temple. Overnight in Chennai.
  • Kapaleeshwar Temple - The renowned Kapaleeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple complex has the traditional market, the tank and Brahmin residential houses.
  • Fort St George - The Fort St. George, a 350-year-old fort with wide battlements is a reminder of the British Empire. Today, the old buildings in the fort house the Tamil Nadu State Government Secretariat and the Legislative Assembly. Within the fort complex, a number of other early buildings still stand, of which St. Mary's Church is the most interesting.
  • Today we will drive to Pondicherry  (3.5 hours drive) - en route stopping over to visit Mahabalipuram.
  • Mahabalipuram - Located just outside Madras city, Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) is a group of monumental rock-cut temples, set amidst palms trees on a long beach, washed by the Bay of Bengal. In fact, it is said that the story of south Indian stone architecture begins on the sandy beaches of Mahabalipuram and from here goes on to reach incredible heights in Kanchipuram, Thanjavur and Madurai.
  • After visiting Mahabalipuram, we will continue to Pondicherry.  Pondicherry was a French colony at one time and its skyline from off-shore is typical of coastal French settlements as is its town planning. Overnight in Pondicherry.
  • Later in the day we will enjoy a walking tour of Pondicherry.
  • Walking tour of Pondicherry - We will start with French Town, an oval-shaped township with the streets aligned at right angles which is unlike any other Indian town. Its skyline from off-shore is typical of coastal French settlements as is its town planning. From here, we will continue to the Tamil Quarter, originally built around a nucleus of shrines. This part of the city has a contrasting architectural style, demonstrated in restored Tamil mansions which have unique elements like semi-public street verandahs for visitors outside the house, and inside, a central courtyard with grand columns.
  • Today we will drive to Tanjore  (4 hours) - en route stopping over to visit the temples at Kumbhakonam and Darasuram.
  • Kumbhakonam Temple - Kumbakonam is a temple town with many Hindu temples located in and around it. There is a popular saying in Sanskrit that Kumbhakonam is more sacred than even Varanasi. Majority of the temples here are dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.
  • Darasuram Temple - The Darasuram temple is a storehouse of art and architecture. The front mandapam of the temple is in the form of a huge chariot drawn by horses. The temple has some exquisite stone carvings.
  • After visiting temples, we will continue to Tanjore. This ancient city of Tanjore enjoys the distinction of having been the capital of Cholas — one of the greatest dynasties of the south India. The Cholas were great temple builders and Tanjore bears witness to this, being dotted with no fewer than 74 temples. Overnight in Tanjore.
  • This morning we will enjoy a tour of Tanjore - visiting Brihadishwara Temple and Tanjore Palace. Overnight in Tanjore.
  • Brihadishwara Temple - Brihadishwara Temple is the crowing glory of Chola architecture. This superb and fascinating monument is one of only handful in India with World Heritage listing. It has been worshipped continuously for more than 1000 years.
  • Tanjore Palace - The Tanjore Palace has huge corridors, spacious halls, arsenal towers and a great collection of Tanjore Bronze sculpture.
  • Later in the afternoon we will proceed to Trichy (1.5 hour one way) to visit the lovely temples here - Rock Fort Temple and Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple.
  • Rock Fort Temple - This is a spectacular monument, perched on a massive rocky outcrop. It is a stiff climb up the 437 steps cut into the stone to the top, but well worth it for you get a fantastic view of the town.
  • Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple - Shrouded in a haze of coconut palms, Sri Ranganathaswamy is one of the largest and most interesting temple complexes in India. It is built on an island, in the middle of Cauvery river and covers a staggering 2.5 sq km.
  • Today we will drive to Madurai  (3.5 hours).  All activities in Madurai are centred around Sri Meenakshi Temple, which is in the heart of the old town and is one of the most stunning living temples in the country. Overnight in Madurai.
  • Later in the afternoon, we will enjoy a tour of Madurai - visiting Meenakshi Temple and Thirumala Palace. We will return to the temple in the evening to witness the evening ceremony at the temple.
  • Meenakshi Temple - This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva’s consort Parvati who is known here as Meenakshi. The temple complex is within a high-walled enclosure, at the core of which are the two sanctums surrounded by a number of smaller shrines and grand pillared halls.
  • Thirumala Palace - Tirumalai Palace is an Indo-Saracenic palace constructed in 1523. Its most remarkable feature is the Swarga Vilasam or the audience hall whose dome rises to a height of 20 m without any kind of support.
  • Evening Ceremony at Temple - At night during the final prayer of the day, Lord Shiva is carried in a palanquin from his shrine and escorted to where Goddess Meenakshi waits in her shrine for her husband. This lively musical procession attracts a big gathering of devotees. Once the Lord Shiva reaches there, they rest in their silver bed chamber till morning.  This daily process is called the closing ceremony or night ceremony.
  • Today we will drive to Thekkady  (4 hours).  Thekkady is widely known for its spice plantations. A walk through them makes an interesting insight into the world of spices with vista of pristine greenery shrouded by low hanging clouds, gurgling brooks and the Western Ghats in the backdrop. Overnight in Thekkady.
  • Later in the day we will visit a Spice Plantation in a walking tour.
  • Spice Walk - Accompanied by a guide you will be taken on tour of the cardamom, nutmeg, vanilla, pepper, coffee and other spices. Stroll amid lush, terraced farms, sprawling plantation estates while listening to bird songs and the murmuring of mountain streams. Make stops along the way to take pictures of the verdant surroundings, and breathe in the fresh mountain air, before continuing to some of the most picturesque vantage points in Kerala.
  • Today we will drive to Kumarakom (3.5 hours) where you arrive in the afternoon.
  • Rest of the day will be at leisure or you may pursue your independent activities. You may opt for a Houseboat Cruise, explore nearby villages, cycle around serene countryside
  • Today we will drive to Cochin (2 hours).  If Kerala is India's most beautiful state, which many believe, then the lovely port of Cochin is its jewel. It has been variously hailed as Queen of the Arabian Sea, Venice of Orient, etc. Some choose to call it simply a museum city for its rich past and colourful present. Overnight in Cochin. Overnight in Cochin.
  • In the evening you may opt to go for the Kathakali Dance Performance for which the guide will collect the payment directly. Kathakali is Kerala’s very own classical dance-drama form which combines facets of ballet, opera, masque and the pantomime. Kathakali explicates ideas and stories from the Indian epics and other story books.
  • Today we will enjoy a tour of Cochin - visiting St Francis Church, Jewish Synagogue and Dutch Palace. Overnight in Cochin.
  • St. Francis Church - Built in 1503 at Fort Cochin, St. Francis Church is one of the oldest churches in the subcontinent. It was built by the Portuguese, but became a Protestant church with the arrival of the Dutch and an Anglican church after the British occupation.
  • Jewish Synagogue - Built in 1568, this simple building has marvellously rich interiors. There are clusters of coloured glass lamps hanging from the ceiling and the floor has blue willow patterned tiles, none of which are identical.
  • Dutch Palace - The Mattancherry Palace was built by the Portuguese in 1555 for the maharaja of Cochin. Later renovated by the Dutch, it came to be known as the Dutch Palace. It has a large central courtyard and a temple depicting scenes from the Ramayana and other legends.
