The first capital of the Central Asian Mughal Empire was the city of Agra. Celebrated for its architecture, the place creates a space for both, a visual and an emotional experience. The tour begins with a visit to the Taj Mahal. A phenomenal architectural marvel of design and construction, the monument is symbolic of Shah Jahan's dedication and love to his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, for whom the structure was created. Constructed in ivory-white marble, this mausoleum rests on the Southern banks of the river Yamuna. The tour will take you further to explore the renowned Agra Fort built by the third Mughal descendant Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar in 1565. While additions to the structure continued to be made in the later years, the red sandstone looks as alive today as it did during the reign of Akbar which marked the apogee of the Mughal empire. The Agra Fort was built before the Mughals shifted their capital from Agra to Delhi. As a result, the Red Fort in New Delhi was built on the same lines and is in fact, rather similar to the one built in its neighboring city.
