  • Visit the two most important sites in Amritsar, the Golden Temple and Jalianwallah Bagh.
  • The Golden Temple was founded by the fourth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Ramdas and completed by his successor Guru Arjan Dev. Like other Sikh religious sites in India, the Golden Temple stands in simple majesty, the gilded splendor of its paneling, dome and minarets shining in the morning light, silhouetted softly in the water and etched gently across the city escape.
  • Amritsar played a pivotal role in India's quest for independence, and no national monument has more significance than Jalianwala Bagh, a solemn, grim reminder of one of the bloodiest chapters of India's freedom movement. A memorial was built here in the year 1951 in order to remember and pay tribute to the people who lost their lives in the massacre.
  • After the sightseeing tour, enjoy street food lunch. People in Amritsar love their street food, and the city is swarming with street-side vendors selling a great variety of dishes - from a refreshing glass of lassi and sugary sweet halwa, to buttery naans and paranthas to succulent tikkas.
  • Visit a dhaba serving Amritsari kulchas. These are breads with a variety of fillings (vegetables, paneer, even chicken or meat) and served with chutneys, achaars or subzis.
  • Continue to the next shop known for its puri-subzi-chana and halwa. This is an absolute must-eat if you are in Amritsar. The next stop will be to sample the great tandoor dishes Punjab is so famous for. Try the mouth-watering tikkas – mutton and chicken - and the famous Amritsari fish. These will be served with naan and chutney.
  • For deserts, it will be jalebi and gulab jamun, the two staples in the state and a must on the menu during celebrations.
