  • Enjoy a trip to Ellora Caves (45 minutes from Aurangabad).
  • The Ellora Caves are an extraordinary complex of Buddhist, Hindu and Jain cave temples built between the 6th and 10th centuries AD. Housing exquisite sculptures, these caves are a World Heritage Site.
  • The caves were excavated from volcanic rock along a 2-km stretch of west-facing embankment. There are 34 major caves, numbered consecutively rather than chronologically, starting with the Buddhist group (Caves 1-13) in the south. Other groups are dedicated to the Brahmanical pantheon (Caves 14-29) and to Jainism (Caves 30-34). The most notable monument is Cave 16, the Kailasa Temple, one of the most amazing structures in the history of architecture. This shrine was not constructed of stone...it was in fact not constructed at all. It was carved and sculpted from the volcanic hillside.
  • The Buddhist caves (also called Vishvakarma caves) are the earliest of the Ellora Caves, dating from 500 to 750 AD. Most of these caves are viharas (monasteries), which were used for study, meditation, communal rituals, eating and sleeping.
