  • Konark’s Sun Temple is one of the finest temples in India. Also known as the Black Pagoda, Konark stands in solitary splendour in open space and is the most striking example of Kalinga architecture. The Sun Temple, where according to Rabindra Nath Tagore, ‘the language of stone, defeats the language of man’ was built in the 13th century by Raja Narasimhadeva. It is an extant example of Indian devotion to the Sun – the God of all gods, the very source of life itself.
  • It is designed as a huge chariot of the Sun God, drawn by seven exquisitely carved and ornamented horses. All around the base of the temple and up the walls and the roof are a continuous procession of carvings, many in erotic style for which Konark, like Khajuraho, is also famous. The profuse carvings depict every living thing in joyful attendance to the Sun God.
