  • Located on the outskirts of Guwahati on the banks of the Brahmaputra, Sualkuchi is a sleepy village where the entire population is directly or indirectly involved in silk weaving.
  • It was established as a silk weaving centre in the 17th century, however, some trace back silk weaving in Sualkuchi to around 10th-11th centuries. It is a great experience to walk through the narrow streets of the village and see silk weaving all around and the rhythmic sounds of the looms.
  • One can see the silk begin its journey from the cocoon stage, to its unravelling and then to the loom and finally as a sari or the traditionally Mekhala Chador (two piece sari which women wear on festive occasions).
  • The local flora and fauna find place in the woven motifs. Weaving a sari takes about 6 days on an average and it may take even longer in case of elaborate designs. During the days of the royalty, only golden zari (golden thread) was used for the motifs but nowadays silk and even cotton is used.
