  • Made of sandstone, the Gwalior Fort is a magnificent monument. It has been the scene of momentous events: imprisonments, battles and jauhars (self-immolation by the wives after their consorts had been defeated in the battle). A steep road leads up to the Fort, flanked by statues of the Jain Tirthankaras, carved into the rock face. The magnificent outer walls of the Fort still stand, two miles in length and 35 feet high. Within the fort are many interesting monuments.
  • Jai Vilas Palace (closed on Monday and Public Holidays) is the current residence of the Scindia royal family of Gwalior. Some 35 rooms in the palace have been converted into a museum. In these rooms, so evocative of a regal lifestyle, the past comes alive. The main attraction of this museum are the Chandeliers in the Durbar Hall and a silver train with cut glass wagons which served guests as it chugged around on miniature rails on the dining table.
