Some of these monasteries are now in ruins while others are still inhabited and are educational and religious centers. In this tour, you will be taken to visit some of the major monasteries around Leh.
  • Shey was the ancient capital of Ladakh and the palace was once the residence of the royal family. The palace is believed to have been the seat of power of the pre-Tibetan kings. A 7.5 metre high copper statue of Buddha, plated with Gold, and the largest of its kind, is installed in the palace.
  • Thiksey is one of the largest and architecturally most impressive gompas. The gompa has images, stupas and wall paintings of Buddha which are exquisite.
  • Hemis is the wealthiest, best known and biggest Gompa of Ladakh. It also has the largest thanka (scroll painting in silk or brocade) in Ladakh which is unfurled once in 12 years. Hemis was built in 1630 A.D. during the reign of Sengge Namgyal and flourished under the Namgyal dynasty.
  • Takthok monastery is the only monastery here which belongs to Nying-ma-pa sect or Red Hat sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It is known as the ‘old order’ monastery. It was founded in 16th century during the reign of King Tshewang Namgyal. Most of the monastery was carved out of the mountain while existing caves were also made into rooms.
  • Chemrey Gompa is believed to have founded by Lama Tagsang Raschen in the 17th century. Belonging to the Drugpa Order, it serves as the residence of about 20 monks and young apprentices. There are a number of shrines inside the monastery.
