Famous for trekking routes, rafting passages and the best yield of apricots in Ladakh, Sham valley is also known as the Eden of Ladakh.
  • Alchi gompa is situated on the banks of the Indus and is one of the oldest standing monasteries in Ladakh built in the 11 century. It has some of the most vibrant frescoes on its walls. One of its wall features thousands of miniature sized pictures of the Buddha. The gompa is no longer an active religious centre and is looked after by monks from the Likir Monastery.
  • The name Likir means ‘The Naga – Encircled’. The reason behind this naming of Likir Gompa of Ladakh is that it stands surrounded by the bodies of the two great serpent spirits, the Naga-rajas, Nanda and Taksako. Lhachen Gyalpo, the fifth king of Ladakh, offered the site where the monastery now stands, to Lama Duwang Chosje. The Lama, a great champion of meditation, blessed the site offered to him, after which the construction on the monastery was undertaken.
  • Basgo is an ancient citadel complex and it is located in a very dramatic landscape. Made of mud-brick, it is perched high in the hills between the Himalaya and Karakoram mountain ranges. The citadel and the three temples located within its walls were built by Tibetan king Grags-pa-‘bum and his descendants in the 16th and 17th centuries A.D. The temple façades are brightly painted and their interior walls are covered with murals depicting vignettes from the life of Buddha.
