It is for this reason that they began constructing gardens here, a result of the lingering nostalgia of their Central Asian past. You will be taken to explore three of these Mughal Gardens - Chashme Shahi, Nishat, and Shalimar - all of which were built on the left bank of the Dal Lake with the Zabarwan mountains in the backdrop.

The smallest garden, Chashme Shahi was commissioned by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his eldest son, Dara Shikoh. The garden, which is 108m long and 38m wide, is spread over one acre of land. The Nishat Bagh has ten terraces with multiple carefully laid out flower beds and magnificent lawns and commands a magnificent view of the lake and snow-capped Pir Panjal Mountain range which stands far away to the west of the valley. It was designed in 1633 by Asif Khan the brother of Nur Jahan. Shalimar is another splendid garden with fountains and a water channel laid out by Emperor Jahangir for his wife, Nur Jahan.
